I had a jury trial in two stages. The first stage was to determine if I had the drugs, and the second stage was to determine if I was trafficking.

I had no drugs on me. I was on my way to an evening calculus class.

The police showed up in court with some LSD they claimed they found in my underwear. This was 1974 and I had to say the police were lying. Back then, (i.e., before the movie Serpico) no one would believe the police would lie.

So then we moved to the second stage about trafficking. My lawyer Paul Copeland brought in an expert from San Fransico to say that the small amount was probably just for my own use. Yikes, surreal, I didn't even have any drugs.
